Family.
“I dunno what his fuckin problem is…”
Aiden Reynolds voice echoes through the office of Wolfslair New York. His hands throw up in the air as he paces back and forth. Kalisto “Kallie” Reznik, his pregnant fiance, professional wrestler and also KERBEROS’ sister sits back in a black leather office chair, her hands fidgeting as Aiden paces. Alex Jones, owner of Wolfslair, ten time world champion and not, DEFINITELY NOT an annoying fat conspiracy theory nutjob, sits at his desk, his hands clasped together as he looks over at Kallie who just offers up a small nod. “You think, maybe, just maybe he doesn’t like you?”
Aiden stops in his tracks and points to himself with an eyebrow raised. “Moi?...why wouldn’t he like me? I’m aye-fucking-dorable mate.”
Kallie laughs and bites her bottom lip trying to keep it in, Aiden turns and narrows his eyes as Alex pushes up from his chair moving around the desk. “Enough.” Aiden steps back, folding his arms over his chest. Alex moves to the window looking out onto the main floor of the gym. Kerberos and Lachlan stand across the room, talking to each other, well, rather, Lachlan is talking, alot, Kerberos is doing up his laces on his boots. “I get it, he’s not as open as others, he has a bit of an attitude.”
“A bit?”
Kallie reached over, slapping Aien on the arm. Aiden shrugged as Alex shook his head and turned back to Aiden. “He’s talented, you know he is. He’s tough as nails and loves a good fight, the truth is, I don’t know why he wanted to join you at Wrestleverse.”
Aiden blinked a few times and shook his head looking over at Alex. “Hold on, you didn’t tell him to follow me an Lachie to Wrestleverse?”
“No.” He looked at Aiden confused, Aiden looked back at Alex confused. Kallie just shook her head feeling very suddenly like the meat in an adiot sandwich as she watched the cogs turn in both their head, she sighed and went to open her mouth but then, just in time, it clicked for Alex. “Ahhh, he’s there to make sure you don’t do something stupid….for her…” Aiden shook his head and looked out the window. Alex smiled and gave AIden a tap on the shoulder before moving out of the office and onto the gym floor.
Aiden sat down across from Kalle, his elbows on his knees, leaning forward. Kallie grinned and shrugged. “I guess he does care…in his own way?” Aiden shook his head and sighed.
“Does he?” Kallie tilted her head as Aidens demeanor changed. From his usual jovial joking, easy going self to a more monotone sound and tense look. “Or is he doin it to screw with me?” He pauses and looks over at the door. “I can’t figure ya brother out. He’s hated me since day one. We both love wrestlin, and he cares about you…and I love you and last time I checked I make ya happy.”
Aiden pops to his feet and moves toward the door, Kallie stands up and follows Aiden grabbing him by the arm. “You do make me happy, you and I are happy. Zach can see that, he can. But….he’s also seen everything I have gone through…picked me up when I was down….he’ll come around…one day…” Aiden sighed heavily and gave a small nod, looking out at everyone working out, his arm sliding around Kallies hip.
First Defence.
“Aye this is the issue with open challenges ya know?”
“What is?”
Dickie Watson, eating a bowl of ramen, looks up and talks with his mouth full. Aiden folds his arms over his chest, one of the rare times Aiden is wearing a shirt.
“Well, I could of got a name of someone I know, a name from another company, someone with an actual name. But instead the only person who has the balls to come up to the champ is Amber Lee. And hey, I’m glad she did. But think about this, I’m the world champion Dickie. THE WORLD FUCKIN CHAMPION. The first champion of a brand new company. I gotta make a statement. I outlasted the whole roster, everyone. I was even able to outlast Lachie and Kerby. Now, I know Lachie is happy for me, see Lachie is a top bloke, really awesome guy. He’s a team player, he’s happy for me and he deserves his own spot, his own fame and maybe…just maybe him and Kerby are gonna bring home those tag straps.”
Aiden looks forward, finally addressing “us” not Dickie, who slurps up a few more noodles.
“But, as we head into this show and we see some new champions crowned, the first one, the first champ gets to defend his title. And hey, I did say I’d face anyone…”
“Yeah, I was thinking about taking the challenge.”
“You were not…”
“....I thought about it.”
“No ya didn’t…”
Dickie slurps more noodles and keeps eye contact with Aiden who laughs, but then the smile fades and Aiden realizes Dickie probably wasn’t joking.
“Right, so movin on. All the names in this company that I knew of, TJ Alexander, Quinn Castillo, Cruze. But out of all of em, the only person to step up was you Amber Lee. So, let me say, thanks love, you’re one tough sheila. Out of everyone you were the first to step up, march into Daddy Danny Powers office and accept it. And let me tell ya why that is something I can respect. See, so many people just talk about wanting to earn their way and earn their shot, and while that too is admirable, well there is something bold about snatchin an opportunity with both hands and siezin it ya know?”
“Fortune favors the bold…CARPE DUMB DUMB.”
“...Carpe what?”
“Ya know…Carpe Dumb Dumb, siece the day…Latin mate ya heard of it?”
“It’s not…It’s…whatever..close enough.”
“So, before I was so rudely interrupted…”
Dickie reaches over grabbing a powdered donut, cause he’s currently eating his feelings, not used to Aiden being the singles star, a small amount of powdered sugar slips onto the floor, Aiden looks down then back up.
“Mate, do ya want ants? Cause that’s how ya get ants” Dickie simply flips him off as Aiden continues. “But here’s the problem Ambz, This title…shit…hold on…” Aiden turns and moves around to the fridge opening the door and pulling the title out before running back over and setting it down. “This title, is the first singles title I’ve held in about five years. And me first world title. See, for years I have been known as that tag team guy and now, well now I’ve been able to break that stigma, to crash through that stereotype.”
“And if ya think I’m gonna just roll over and lose this title in the first defence? Come on. While I admire ya guts takin this challenge and I am under no illusions here that you’re gonna bring EVERYTHING at me, I also know that I have to win this. I can’t let you take this from me, I can’t let you become the champion off my back.”
“So, at New ground, you and I are gonna go out there and fight over this championship, you’ll do all you can, you will come at me with everythin cause I have seen that look in your eyes. That hunger, that fire, I’ve seen it and I get it. But just cause I’m now a world champion doesn’t mean I’m going to be complacent…bring everything at me Amber…and I’ll do the same.”
