Amber sits out front of the lawyer’s office and scratches Scooter’s head as it rests in her lap. She’s been sitting for nearly fifteen minutes, too nervous to go in, still knowing she needed to. Her mom’s lawyer had called her about a reading of her mom’s will and wanted to do it today.
“Well, here goes,” She says looking down at Scooter.
Once they are inside the office a woman informs them that Mr. Hamlin is coming soon. Taking a seat, Amber adjusts Scooter’s work vest and then waits rather impatiently as she crosses her legs.
“Amber! A pleasure to see you, please do come in!”
Amber follows the man, who she wagers is in his early 60’s, into a really nice looking office before he closes the door.
“I’m sure you’ve been wondering about your mother’s will.”
“I need to know what to do with everything. I’ve taken as much as I can into my own home already.”
“Well let's get right to the point, shall we?”
Devon opens up an envelope. Immediately, Amber recognizes the handwriting on the forms as her mother’s. Devon reads the letter to himself before repeating its contents to Amber.
“I, Sara Jennifer Lee hereby leave my entire estate to my beautiful daughter Amber. The property located at 150 White Oak Garden including all furniture, jewelry, and property located on that property, both vehicles 2018 GMC Sierra and 2015 Kia Sportage, and the contents of a safe deposit box located at the Scotia Bank of California. A key to that box should be attached to this document. In addition to that, I leave to my daughter, Amber <middle name> Lee, my entire life savings. Bank Account, stock portfolio, and other investments which have been detailed in a statement also attached to this document. My darling Amber, I’ve been saving for you for many years. Put it to good use. I know you will.”
“May I see the letter, please?” Amber asks as tears well up in her eyes. Scooter gets closer to Amber and lays his head in her lap. Amber wraps her arms around his big neck and hugs him tightly as she is handed the letter.
“As of the date of this document, there should be two hundred thousand and fifty thousand dollars in my accounts. You were born to do great things Amber. I’ve always had faith that you’ll achieve your dreams of becoming a star wrestler. I’m sorry I won’t be around to see your first match, but I’ll be watching over you, in spirit. Love you forever, Momma.” Amber is in complete and total shock… Her mother is gone. And she suddenly has an influx of money and property?
“Here is the key for the safety deposit box. Your mother mentioned that she stored some of her more expensive jewelry in there, as well some gold and silver. Maybe a few other priceless family artifacts. Did you have any other questions for me right now?”
“Uhhh… No. I don’t think so. Thank you for everything Mr. Hamlin,” Amber replies as she stands and shakes hands with the older man and then gives a gentle tug on Scooter’s leash as he follows her out of the office. Getting back into the truck that is now hers, Amber looks up at the sky and smiles. She will be able to do so much with that money. She WILL put it to good use.
“Thank you, Mom…” She says and kisses the top of Scooter’s head and then scratches behind his ears. She fiddles with the radio stations and finds one dedicated to the band, Shinedown. Her favorite band.
An appropriate song for reflecting on the life her mother led and the opportunity she’s given to Amber. She pulls out of the parking lot and towards the future.
Amber sets her phone up on the dashboard of the truck that is now hers and begins to talk.
“Axis, seems like you and I are in a similar boat. We’re both new to the business but that’s where our similarities end though I am afraid. I’ve been training for the wrestling world for years. My cross fit training has given me stamina and the cardio to go the distance in the ring that I don’t think you can. I’m 6’2 and 175 pounds, I do a lot of training to maintain my body. Can you say the same? Is your head really in the wrestling game or is it stuck back on your ranch with your wife? Do you honestly believe you have what it takes to beat me? I don’t think you do. Wrestling and ranching are two completely different things. This week you step into the ring with the one and only Amber Ava Lee and I am going to plow right through you and send you back to your wife and your ranch, a shell of your former self. So you’d best be prepared for the fight of your life, Axis because that’s what you’re in for when you get into the ring with me. Don’t underestimate me because I’m a woman, that would be another grave mistake for you to make. I hope you’re prepared for action because that’s what you’re going to get.”
Turning off the video and closing her phone, Amber pulls out of the parking lot and smiles down at Scooter.
“Off to get lunch and then we head to the bank, Scooter! What do you think?”
Scooter threw his head back and howled out the window as Amber pulled into traffic and headed for the nearest Starbucks.
