Amber let herself into her mom’s house and looked around the living room area, there were boxes everywhere. She’d been spending as much time as she could bear to do so, taking pictures down off the walls and putting them away along with various other treasures that her mother had collected over the years. She sat down on the couch and buried her face in her hands and started to cry, Amber felt like that was all she had done in the month since her mother had passed away. Amber’s rottweiler Scooter put his head on her knee and nudged his way until she put her arms around his massive neck.
“Hey Scooter, you wanna go outside and play?” Amber asked him as she stood up. Scooter understood the words “outside” and “play” and he barked to be let out the back door into the massive yard that Amber’s mom had.
“Come on Scooter!” She said as she kissed the top of his head.
Once Scooter was outside, Amber grabbed a few boxes and got to work wrapping her mother’s ornaments in paper. She’d been filling up boxes for a couple of hours and realized she hadn’t eaten. She carried the boxes out to her truck and then went to grab Scooter.
“Come on Scooter! Time to go get lunch!”
Amber drove through the Burger King Drive thru and ordered a bacon double cheeseburger, large fries, large Pepsi and a little ice cream cone for Scooter. When she pulled up to the window to pay, Scooter was patiently waiting in the passenger seat and barked as the woman opened the window and startled her.
“Scooter be a good boy or no ice cream,” Amber said as she took the cone.
“It’s okay he just startled me!” The young woman said.
As Amber drove away with one hand, she let Scooter lick the ice cream cone.
“Is that good Scooter?”
“WOOF!”
Amber pulled over into the parking lot and opened up her bag, no sooner had she done so when the dreaded sea gulls began to close in on the truck. Scooter barked out the window and the birds scattered but were quick to come back once Scooter had settled down. Taking a big bite of her cheeseburger, Amber thought about the last six months. Her mom’s cancer had come back and it had spread through out her body. Her mother made the decision not to continue with treatment, she moved to the pallative care unit of the hospital and Amber had left the place in Florida where she had been training so that she could be by her mother’s side. Alice had a lot of good days at first and Amber would take her out in a wheelchair for a walk around the hospital grounds. When it got to the point that her mom wasn’t well enough to to go out, Amber would bring in her guitar and sing her mom some of her favorite songs like “Get Up” by Shinedown. (( Shinedown - Get Up Lyrics - YouTube ))
Her mom was a big fan of Shinedown which had always surprised Amber but she couldn’t fault her mom for loving good music. When the end was near, Amber would curl up on a cot beside her mother’s bed. Amber told her mom that she understood how tired she was and that it was okay to let go…Less than half an hour later, as Amber held her mom’s hand she passed away. The funeral had been three weeks ago and the ache inside of her heart was still so raw that she wondered if it would ever really go away.
Pulling back into the driveway of her two bedroom house, Amber unloaded the boxes inside as Scooter ran around her legs. She was on auto pilot at the moment, she filled up Scooter’s water and food dishes and then decided to go for a run so she kicked off her sandals and changed into her running shoes. After Amber made sure that Scooter was comfortable, she took off for a two kilometer run around the block. When she got back she immediately got into the shower and changed into a t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans with both knees ripped out of them. She was supposed to pick up Chase and Tommy in forty five minutes, it would take her almost that long to get there depending on traffic. Grabbing the keys to her own car, she told Scooter to be a good boy and she took off to the bus depot.
Leaning up against the hood of her car, Amber waited with her arms folded for Tommy and Chase’s bus to arrive. She watched as the people stepped down from the bus each person looking weary and tired. Tommy had told her it was going to be a three day ride and she had felt bad for the two of them, her eyes lit up as she saw Tommy and Chase step down. After they grabbed their bags, Chase and Tommy scanned the immediate area and spotted Amber. She walked towards them both and hugged each of them.
“I’ve missed you guys,” She said as she hit the trunk button on her car keys.
“We’ve missed you too Amber.”
“We’re really sorry about your mom,” Tommy said as he closed the trunk.
Amber nodded her head and got behind the wheel as Tommy and Chase climbed into the back seat.
Tommy watched with his head on the window as the city passed by and started to nod off until he heard Amber and Chase talking about something.
“Huh?”
“Thought so, you were asleep!” Chase said.
“I was not,” He replied as he playfully elbowed her.
“What were you two saying?”
Chase just grinned at looked at Amber with a nod of her head. Amber nodded her head back and winked at Tommy in the rear view mirror.
Those eyes of Amber’s were something else…She always looked like she was deep in thought but Tommy and Chase both could see the puffiness covered up by makeup and they could tell she had been crying.
“How’s Scooter doing?” Chase asked.
Amber’s cell phone was nearly at its max and most of those pictures were of Scooter. She had shown them off to anyone and everyone who would look at them when she first arrived at Absolute Wrestling. She had adopted Scooter two years ago as a pup and had him trained as a service dog for her panic attacks she sometimes had.
People often judged Amber when she was out with Scooter and he was wearing his “service dog” vest. She even had someone come up to her and say that Scooter’s breed ((Rotweiller)) shouldn’t be allowed to roam free.
“First of all he’s obviously not roaming freely he is on a leash, and second of all he’s a hell of a lot nicer than you are. Screw you!”
Then there were the people who wanted to pet Scooter but got annoyed when Amber would say no and ask why.
“He’s a working dog and right now he is working. You cannot pet him.”
Most of the time though people were pretty respectful when Amber explained what Scooter’s job was. Which was to keep her safe. When she first arrived at Absolute, the trainers were concerned that Scooter would be disruptive and would interfere with the running of things but, Scooter quickly proved himself to be trustworthy and eventually it got to the point where the trainers forgot Scooter was even there.
“He’s doing really good, had a nice run around my mom’s backyard this afternoon and then we headed out for lunch and then I took him home and unloaded some boxes.”
“Once we’ve had a day or so to get over this bus ride, we’ll do what we can to help. Right Chase?”
“Of course we will Amber,” Chase replied.
Arriving at their building which wasn’t in the best area, Amber popped the trunk from inside the car as Chase and Tommy got out. Carrying both of their bags, Tommy leaned into the driver’s window and spoke to Amber.
“If you aren’t busy Amber, would you like to come over for something to eat?”
“I’d like that Tommy. Thank you,” She replied with one of those bright smiles that never failed to hold his attention.
“Bring Scooter too!” Chase called out.
As Amber pulled away from the curb, she thought about the upcoming fight she had lined up for Wrestleverse and knew she was in for the fight of her life. She would do what she always did and that was persevere, and she would win.
