Amber got up from the rowing machine and stretched out her legs and then sauntered over to the kettle bells. Picking up a twenty pound one, she moved to stand in front of a mirror while she went through the exercises she had been shown by the gym owner several weeks ago. She’d wanted to incorporate something else into her work out routine aside from the free weights and thought the kettle bells would be an excellent idea.
The owner had gone through the exercises with her several times and Amber had no problem committing them to memory. They had been working on the exercises a few times when Trevor asked Amber out for coffee, She had politely declined saying that her mother had just passed away and she was grieving. Trevor showed her a few other tricks to working out with the kettle bells and left her to her own devices. She stepped onto the treadmill and ran for thirty five minutes before getting off and wiping the sweat from her face and heading into the locker room to shower. It was only twelve thirty so she grabbed a quick bite to eat on her way home and called Chase’s cell phone.
“Hey Boo! What’s up?”
“I just finished working out and wanted to know if you and Tommy were free to go to the beach with me.”
“Hang on, he’s sitting right across from me.”
“Sup?” Tommy asked.
“I wanted to know if you and Chase wanted to go to the beach, I just got home from working out and I thought it was a gorgeous day to go. You guys bring the snacks and I will bring the drinks.”
“That sounds like an awesome idea Amber, what time?” Tommy asked. “Meet me by the ice cream stand in an hour or so.”
“Sure thing Amber, see you then.”
“So are we going?” Chase asked.
“We are, we gotta get ready pronto and get to the beach and meet her at the ice cream stand. Do we have enough money to grab some snacks?”
“Yeah I think so,” Chase replied as she got up and headed to her bedroom to change.
Amber changed into a bright blue bikini and a pair of jean cut off shorts and a tank top. Grabbing an empty cooler, she put it in the back of her truck and checked on Scooter before she headed to the store to get some bags of ice and some Pepsi. An hour later, she was sitting on a bench with the cooler at her feet and her backpack beside her with her tank top balled up inside the bag. Amber stood up when she saw Chase and Tommy and hugged them both. The three of them managed to find a space close to the water and stretched out on their towels with the cooler behind them and the snacks in between them. They spent the afternoon sunbathing and goofing around in the water. It wasn’t until Amber got home and made sure to feed Scooter that she realized she hadn’t thought of her mom all day and that made her feel bad.
Amber grabbed a leather bound journal from her kitchen table and stepped outside onto her back deck and sat at a table as she watched Scooter running around the yard.
“Silly dog,” She said with a snort as Scooter came running over to her for pets.
“Who’s a good boy? Who’s a mama’s boy?” She asked and Scooter barked in reply.
She opened her journal and began to write about her day, working out and going to the beach with Tommy and Chase and how she had a wrestling match coming up. She looked up at the stars and spoke in a soft voice.
“ I miss you mom and I cannot seem to undo the emptiness that I feel inside. I miss the way you held my broken pieces and my bruises and told me things would be okay and even if it wasn’t you’d still be there. I remember how, thanks to you I dreamed bigger. I wanted something more than what I had and I chased my dreams and now I am a wrestler mom. I wish you had been able to see me the first time…I loved better because of how you loved me mom. I was strong because you taught me to use my weaknesses for good. To give even if I was tired…You’d like Tommy and Chase mom, they are hard workers just like I am. I know you didn’t want me to come home when I did mom but I had to. I wanted to be by your side. I’m so glad I got to spend some time with you, that we got to make memories before you left me”
She would win her match against Georgia, she had faith in her abilities and knew that with the match things were on her side.
