“Women are never so strong as after their defeat.”
― Alexandre Dumas, Queen Margot
Man, do I wish that first show had gone better! I mean, I know this was our first match here, but I thought we would have a better showing. We're not BAD at wrestling, me and Tommy... but you'd never know that by the way it came out. That's okay though. Means we'll get a chance to sneak up on some people when we spin this defeat into the victory we deserve.
I personally like that we started this way. Why, you ask? Because, just like Slade always told me, "You learn way more from a single loss than you ever do after a thousand wins." And he's right. He's absolutely right. If we'd have walked in the door and stomped mudholes in people, how could we figure out what to work on?
For the first few days after that disaster, I didn't want to even get out of bed. I wanted to just stay in my room and forget about it all. But then, when I was at my lowest, I heard Slade's voice echoing in my ears. "You fall down seven times, you get up eight."
So I'm gonna do just that.

Life is pretty good.
One day after suntanning and ice creams with Machine and Boo--my lady Amber--I was out front of my place, doing some yoga. The sun beating down on you, drenching the muscles and sinew in golden light... Very few things are this peaceful for me. I had my headphones in, and it helped me focus. Slade taught me that. He has been so vital to my career, and I just wish I'd have had the chance to carry on with him and Tommy. But, such is life.
Just then, I felt a tap on the shoulder, and I whipped around to see my roomie and tag team partner standing there.
Chase Andrews: Damn it, Machine... you can't sneak up on me like that!
Tommy Gunn: Sneak up? I've been shouting at you for the last five minutes until I figured out you had your earbuds in.
He had me.
Chase Andrews: Alright, you got me. I was doing yoga and thinking about the things Slade taught us about a loss.
Tommy frowned at me.
Tommy Gunn: I swear, if you tell me we're going to learn from the battle royale before we head out to our McWrestling match...
Chase Andrews: There are NO small venues... just small performances.
Tommy Gunn: Quoting Slade again, I see...
Chase Andrews: What should I say, Machine? Hmm? That man has forgotten more about this business than we've learned in a lifetime. I spent all my time there--all my time!--taking notes. Learning about this business. Learning the ins and outs. Learning what it's like on the road. Learning how to bounce back after nights like the other night. Didn't you?
I had Tommy this time. He could tell that I was right, and whenever that happened, the scowl on his face just tugged at my heartstrings.
Chase Andrews: Look, I don't want to fight. Can we just get on the same page and head out for the show? We need to swing by Boo's place and see if she needs a ride.
Tommy Gunn: I... fuck, you're right. Let's just talk on the way.
Chase Andrews: That's my Machine... go get packed, and I'll do the same after my shower. Maybe you need to call Boo and see if she's in need of a carpool buddy?
He smiled, the first smile I'd seen today. I liked that a lot better. He dashed inside, and I rolled up my yoga mat, offering one last salutation to the sun before going inside to hit the showers.
